The reason being, it is an either/or question. I too think that it is insensitive and that the Muslims should consider other options and even offers made by Mayor Bloomberg, but I also honestly believe that our country will get into a very costly legal battle which it will lose if anyone tries to stop it’s building. NEW ORLEANS — The Saints’ first Super Bowl title was so big in new Orleans that Mardi Gras, a revered local institution dating back well more than a century, became popularly known as, “Lombardi Gras.” new Orleans’ momentous victory over the Indianapolis Colts occurred in the middle of the city’s parade season, so the Saints’ celebratory ride through town with the Vince Lombardi Trophy was simply added to the lineup. in the following days, players, coaches, team officials and the trophy made appearances in traditional parades as well. And while Mardi Gras ended way back on Ash Wednesday, it seems as though Lombardi Gras still isn’t over quite yet – certainly not by the looks of the French Quarter, where a massive concert stage has been built on the river front, overlooking historic Jackson Square. in the hours before the defending champs kick off the NFL season against the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday night in the Louisiana Superdome, the Big Easy will host a concert featuring Dave Matthews and Taylor Swift, an NFL-sponsored parade and a citywide bash for which a number of schools and businesses have already decided to shut down. “It’s like the Super Bowl all over again,” Saints running back Reggie Bush said. indeed, Saints owner Tom Benson will show off the Lombardi Trophy once more at a newly completed festival plaza next to the Superdome that has been named Champions Square. then the festivities move inside the dome, where those with the hottest ticket in town will witness the raising of a 2009 championship banner before kickoff. The Vikings would like to see the party end right about there, and they have their reasons for believing they can make that happen. Minnesota outperformed the Saints in numerous statistical categories when they met in last season’s NFC championship game and might have won if not for five turnovers. The Vikings outgained the Saints 165 yards to 68 on the ground and 310 yards to 189 in the air. in the end, Minnesota was done in by three lost fumbles and two interceptions, the last by Saints cornerback Tracy Porter when the Vikings were threatening to take a late-game lead. “They took us to the brink of destruction,” Saints safety Roman Harper recalled. “If it wasn’t for another Tracy Porter pick, who knows where we would be. … It was a great game last year and should be a great game this year.” There is one considerable difference, however, as Minnesota coach Brad Childress was quick to point out. when this game ends, both teams get to keep playing. “We’ve got 15 games after that,” Childress stressed. “You beat new Orleans, Miami’s coming to town. Huston said Thursday night that the numbers of dead and injured were “likely to climb.” He said 20 to 25 structures have been destroyed and 50 others are threatened. (CNN) — Firefighters were battling a gas line or gas-fueled blaze Thursday night that engulfed dozens of homes and sent bright flames and huge plumes of smoke shooting hundreds of feet into the air in a neighborhood in San Bruno, California, emergency management officials said. “The flames are being fueled by something,” said Kelly Huston of California Emergency Management. “There was a loud explosion being reported by witness and just dozens of homes on fire” He said there were some injured and walking wounded after the fire, which started around 7 p.m. (8 p.m. MT). “I was standing next to a police officer who’d been in Baghdad and he said he had never seen anything quite so bad as this,” John Hampton, a freelance photographer who witnessed the fire, told CNN affiliate KGO. “It looks as if this area was fire-bombed.” Investigators were still trying to determine what caused the fire. “It was a gas station explosion, or a pipeline close to a gas station,” said Jay Alan, a spokesman for the state emergency management, citing information from the San Bruno Police Department. Authorities are worried about winds that could spread the fire and embers that are falling on adjacent houses, he said. Helicopters were dropping retardant on homes to try to stop the fire’s spread. They are still assessing the area and trying to determine how many people are injured, he said. “It’s still very much an unfolding incident as we speak,” he said. KGO reported that people as far as a half-mile away said they felt the boom and heat of the explosion. Two evacuation centers have been set up and at least 100 people are being cared for at one of the locations, Melanie Finke of the San Francisco Red Cross said. Church of Highlands Staff Pastor Leigh Bishop told CNN he witnessed a “devastating explosion” that caused the fast-moving fire. Bishop said two people from his church had lost their homes and at least one person had burn injuries. NEW ORLEANS (AP) — for football fans in the big Easy, “Lombardi Gras” just keeps on rolling. Drew Brees and the Saints extended new Orleans’ post-Super Bowl euphoria for at least another week and denied Brett Favre a victory in the Louisiana Superdome one more time. Brees completed 27 of 36 passes for 237 yards and one touchdown, and the Saints survived a hard-fought season opener for a 14-9 victory over the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday night. It wasn’t the most spectacular way to open a title defense, considering it was a rematch of the riveting 2009 NFC title game last January, which the Saints won in overtime to advance to their first Super Bowl. “We’re not used to 14-9 victories, but we’re used to winning,” said Brees, the reigning Super Bowl MVP. “So we like the W.” It was the lowest-scoring victory of the Sean Payton era, which began in 2006, but the Saints will take it, especially after their defense limited Favre to 171 yards passing and one touchdown. “I know people are going to say it wasn’t the fireworks they expected it to be,” Favre said. Although his offense was far less potent than usual, Payton said he “was proud of the way we came through and made enough plays to start the season 1-0.” unlike the NFC championship game, the Vikings didn’t lose a fumble and turned the ball over only once on Jonathan Vilma ’s interception of Favre, who made an ill-advised throw as Roman Harper hit him on a safety blitz. That gave Minnesota a 9-7 halftime lead, which the Saints erased on their first drive of the second half. “We were right where we wanted to be at halftime, then it was three-and-out, three-and-out,” Vikings coach Brad Childress said. “There were not a lot of throws to be made downfield. they were going to hold us down and make us bleed slowly.” The Saints’ triumph ended a long day of festivities which for some might have been more exciting than the game itself. Three Twin Cities restaurant workers and four alleged accomplices are facing federal bank fraud charges of capturing the credit card information of local diners and using it to make at least $150,000 in purchases for themselves.The seven were charged by an indictment unsealed Tuesday in federal district court in St. Paul. they are Demetrius Darnell Thomas, 35, and Kanetra Danielle Range, 31, of Rogers; Nancia Raquel Range, 34, and Makiesha Edwina Mayo, 28, of St. Paul; Anthony Curry, 23, of Plymouth; Brandon Conique Scott, 27, of Eagan, and Brian Craig Davis, 46, of Chaska.According to the U.S. attorney’s office, Curry, Mayo and Scott worked in Twin Cities restaurants and "skimmed" customers’ credit card information.Skimming often involves copying or capturing the information with a small electronic device during an otherwise legitimate transaction. The information can be sold or transferred to counterfeit credit cards, which can be used freely by the thieves and accomplices. It is most often carried out in restaurants, bars and gas stations, as well as at ATM machines.The indictment alleges that between August and at least December of 2009, the group purchased at least $150,000 in goods and services illegally with restaurant customers’ stolen credit card information. purchases specifically cited in the indictment were $200.72 at the St. Louis Park Target and $800 at Elsa’s House of Sleep in St. Paul. The indictment describes a $400 purchase at Footlocker in Edina as "attempted."The U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the St. Paul Police Department, the Edina Police Department, the St. Louis Park Police Department and the Minnesota Financial Crimes Task Force investigated.

On Feb. 23, 1944, the Jewish teenager observed: “Nearly every morning I go to the attic to blow the stuffy air out of my lungs, from my favourite spot on the floor I look up at the blue sky and the bare chestnut tree, on whose branches little raindrops shine, appearing like silver, and at the seagulls and other birds as they glide on the wind. as long as this exists, I thought, and I may live to see it, this sunshine, the cloudless skies, while this lasts I cannot be unhappy.” On Monday, a storm snapped and toppled the diseased and dying tree. even so, the 150-year-old tree will continue to flourish around the world thanks to saplings. some were planted in a park in Amsterdam; others were donated to locations in Europe and in the U.S. Sonoma State University, the first of 11 U.S. recipients, will let the seedling grow under quarantine for three years before planting it at the Rohnert Park school’s Erna and Arthur Salm Holocaust & Genocide Memorial Grove. The New Orleans Saints beat the Minnesota Vikings 14-9 Thursday night in the NFL season’s opening game, which also was a rematch of last season’s NFC championship game, also won by the Saints.

The defending Super Bowl champion Saintstook the lead quickly with a 29-yard pass from Drew Breesto DeveryHenderson in the game’s first few minutes. The Vikings struck back in the second quarter with a field goal and a 20-yard Brett Favretouchdown pass to VisantheShiancoe (the extra point was blocked), giving Minnesota a 9-7 halftime lead.

Saints running back Pierre Thomas finished the scoring with athird-quarter touchdown run. Brees(26 for 36) threwfor 236 yards, and Favre, who was intercepted once, threw for 171 yards (15 for 27).

The Vikings’ Ryan Longwellkicked off, the Saints’ Courtney Roby returned the ball just past the 20, and Super Bowl MVP Drew Brees has started off his season with two straight complete passes. [Original post, 8:28 p.m.] Awfully nice of the New Orleans Saints to host the Minnesota Vikings on the night the Saints raise their Super Bowl banner, isn’t it?

The NFL’s regular season is about to kick off in New Orleans’ Superdome, where the Saints are taking on the Vikings in a rematch of last season’s NFC title game.

New Orleans beat Minnesota 31-28 in overtime in that January contest, allowing the Saints to advance to the Super Bowl, where they beat the Indianapolis Colts 31-17.

Though the Vikings can’t get that opportunity back, they will be motivated to redeem themselves after January’s NFC title performance, during which they committed five turnovers but still had opportunities to win the game.
