Think of Hollywoods second quarter as the studios version of Easter: after fasting for solid new content over the course of Oscar season, the good movies emerge from the crypt with hopes of communing with the masses, and facilitating a resurrection of Tinseltowns bottom line.Its not an easy time to release a big title as grown-ups get busy with taxes and students cram for mid-terms, which is why the spring used to be home to mid-budget thrillers, lowbrow comedies and high-gloss kids stuff — such as last years lineup that included Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, Baby Mama and Nims Island. Yet, for all the challenges, the season can also be a great time for a change-up sales pitch, an under-the-radar sleeper or an early start to summer blockbuster season thanks to last years big liftoff for Iron Man — a May 2 launch that was so successful, the studios are now lining up their big-budget tentpoles for bumper-to-bumper releases throughout May.In the hopes of helping you navigate the whirls and eddies of this years spring flood, heres a quick rundown of the highlights:MARCHWatchmen (March 6): In this dystopian take on humanitys collective future, we glimpse into an altered past where, in 1985, the government has eliminated all superhero activity — until a former latex-wearing vigilante is executed gangland style, forcing the now-oppressed people in stretchy tights to reunite and make a stand. Sounds like comic book nonsense, but with Zack Snyder (300) at the helm, we can be sure of one thing: Patrick Wilsons pectoral muscles will not go unnoticed. Starring Patrick Wilson, Carla Gugino, Billy Crudup, Jackie Earle Haley.Duplicity (March 20): The ad campaign for this Tony Gilroy (Michael Clayton) thriller riffs on the Survivor tagline with copy that reads: Outwit. Outspy. Outsmart. Outplay. Then get out. This might not tell us too much about the spy vs. spy plot involving Julia Roberts and Clive Owen, but the cast and the director are enough to make this stylish outing appealing to grown-ups jonesing for a smart caper. Starring Julia Roberts, Clive Owen, Tom Wilkinson and Paul Giamatti.Adventureland (March 27): All those non-grown-ups jonesing for teen-themed jocularity will find plenty to warm up to in Adventureland, the latest film from Superbad director Greg Mottola. A period piece set all the way back in 1987, when lives were simpler and hairstyles more complex, this coming-of-age comedy centres on college grad James (Jesse Eisenberg) and his quest to find a real job after college. When all he can land is a job at the local theme park, James realizes Whack-a-Mole could become a life metaphor. Starring Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Bill Hader, Kristen Wiig and Ryan Reynolds. Monsters Vs. Aliens (March 27): Featuring the voices of Reese Witherspoon, Hugh Laurie, Seth Rogen, Paul Rudd and Kiefer Sutherland. A great big kids movie featuring monsters and aliens in the same plot, this digitally animated tale begins when a little girl is transformed into a gigantic monster by a random asteroid. When aliens attempt to take over Earth, only the monstrous lassie and her mutant friends have the moxie to save the planet.Also in March: All about Steve (Mar. 6), Crossing Over (March 13), Race to Witch Mountain (March 13) I Love You, Man (March 20), Creek (March 20), Sunshine Cleaning (March Undated).APRILObserve and Report (April 10): before you think this is just another goofy backdrop for Seth Rogens unique brand of shtick, remember this movie also features Anna Faris (Housebunny) — a woman who can go toe-to-toe with Rogen when it comes to screwball comedy and brilliant improv. now that we have that settled, this Jody Hill (The Foot Fist Way) comedy is about a bi-polar mall cop (Rogen) who must stop a flasher from destroying his indoor Eden, filled with plastic flowers and over-chlorinated water. Sounds a tad familiar, but so what? As if the life crises of overweight mall cops could ever get boring? Starring Seth Rogen, Anna Faris, Ray Liotta, Patton Oswalt and Michael Pena. 17 again (April 17): Director Burr Steers directed a little sleeper called Igby Goes down a few years ago, and it may well be the best movie featuring a Culkin brother ever made. High praise, indeed, but 17 again could outdo Igby because it features bona fide heartthrob Zac Efron as a much younger Matthew Perry. no need to be confused: Its like 13 going on 30 or Being Erica for boys. A middle-aged dude realizes hes made big mistakes, and gets a chance to fix them. Starring Zac Efron, Matthew Perry, Leslie Mann.Obsessed (April 24): Its been more than 20 years since men felt the cold shiver of oversexed guilt in the wake of Adrian Lynes terrifying Fatal Attraction, which means this modern update should have some fertile terrain — and a few good twists — as it stars Idris Elba and Beyonce Knowles as a happily married couple who find their lives turned upside down by a psychotic nymph played by Ali Larter. The trailer showing Larter and Knowles in a knock-down cat fight is all the sale pitch this movie needs. Starring Beyonce Knowles, Idris Elba, Ali Larter and Christine Lahti. The Soloist (April 24): Postponed from last year in the wake of Robert Downey Jr.s banner year, this high-profile drama could be the seasons sleeper as it tells the true story of a violin prodigy (Jamie Foxx) who found himself homeless on the streets of Los Angeles until a group of well-intentioned supporters tried to get him back on stage. The ads make it look a tad hokey, but Downey seems incapable of malodorous or cheesy performances these days, and with Joe Wright (Atonement, Pride and Prejudice) in the directors chair, The Soloist should be an easy score. Starring Starring Jamie Foxx, Robert Downey Jr. Catherine Keener, Tom Hollander, Lisa Gay Hamilton.Also in April: fast & Furious (April 3), Dragonball Evolution (April 10) Hannah Montana: The Movie (April 10), Case 39 (April 10), Crank 2: High Voltage (April 17), State of Play (April 17), 50 Dead Men Walking (April Undated).MAY X-Men Origins: Wolverine (May 1): Hugh Jackman, Ryan Reynolds, Dominic Monaghan and Liev Schreiber are enough man to make this latest X-Men movie, but even with all these muscular men in tight, shiny clothes, this prequel should satisfy a broad range of fans thanks to some promising dramatic content: we learn how Logan (aka Wolverine) ended up with razor-sharp implants all over his body, and apparently, it has to do with a girl! Starring Hugh Jackman, Ryan Reynolds, Danny Huston, Will.i.am and Lynn Collins.Star Trek (May 8): Promising answers to some of the gnarliest Star Trek questions, such as the secret behind Spock and Kirks deep bond, the source of Scottys constant irritation with the propulsion system, and the origin of Boness ominous nickname, this prequel to the 60s era TV show wont just appeal to Trekkies thanks to JJ Abrams (Lost, Mission Impossible III), who is calling the shots on this highly anticipated science-fiction movie that bridges current-day Earth with the utopian future. Starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Eric Bana, Simon Pegg, Winona Ryder, Karl Urban and John Cho.Angels & Demons (May 15): Ron Howard takes another kick at novelist Dan Browns holy can with the prequel to Da Vinci Code. once again Tom Hanks plays a Harvard symbol expert who becomes embroiled in a life-threatening plot involving secretive religious orders. In this adventure, our hero finds himself up against The Illuminati — a murderous group with an ancient past, and a lot to lose. Starring Tom Hanks, Ayelet Zurer, Ewan McGregor, Stellan Skarsgard.Terminator Salvation (May 22): Clearly, the set had no shortage of drama thanks to Christian Bales baleful — and much publicized — hissy fit, but one can only hope director McG doesnt let the raw emotion seep out the sides of this hulking, problem-plagued production that attempts to resurrect James Camerons juggernaut franchise with the inevitable confrontation between John Connor and the machines. from all reports so far, the movie has met challenges out of the gate, thanks to a novice production company (Halcyon), a scorching new Mexico shoot and a cinematographer who apparently cannot sit still. Well see just how much salvation this movie can muster. Starring Christian Bale, Anton Yelchin, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jadagrace and Moon Bloodgood.Night at the Museum: Battle at the Smithsonian (May 22): Montreal-born director Shawn Levy directed one of the most successful kids movies ever made with his original tale of a bumbling night watchman at new Yorks Museum of Natural History, and this Vancouver-spun sequel is even bigger — because this one takes place at none other than the Smithsonian (well, a shipbuilding hangar made to look like the D.C. landmark). When a few live exhibits from the Big Apple go missing, Larry Daley (Ben Stiller) must go to Washington to restore them to their proper place. Starring Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Steve Coogan, Amy Adams. The Brothers Bloom (May 29): Adrien Brody and Mark Ruffalo are a really tough sell as two brothers, but the two talented actors find a way to make it work in this Rian Johnson (Brick) comic thriller about two lifelong con men trying to make one big score before retirement. their mark is a rich heiress with one too many hobbies, and a personality that meshes perfectly with her would-be defrauder. By PAUL VACHONSpecial to the Oakland Press Sundown on Wednesday, Sept. 8, begins the first of Tishrei, 5771, the date of Rosh Hashana, which commemorates the Jewish New Year.Jews worldwide embrace the holiday as a celebration of their unity as a people and to express hope for a new year abundant with peace and blessings. As is customary, the Rosh Hashana celebration culminates with a festival meal which inaugurates the Days of Awe, a 10-day period during which the faithful reflect on their sins and resolve to do better.The Hebrew word for sin, chet, is derived from an archery term meaning “missing the mark.” this underscores the Jewish view of sin, that as humans we are essentially good, but that our sins result from our errors.although Rosh Hashana is commonly referred to as the Jewish New Year, Rabbi Joseph Krakoff of Congregation Sharrey Zedek in Southfield said the holiday is the beginning of one of four overlapping years explained in Jewish law both in the oral (Mishnah) and written traditions (the Talmud).The two most significant relate to religious and legal aspects of life in ancient Israel.“The ecclesial year actually begins at Passover,” he said. “Rosh Hashana marks the beginning of the New Year for legal contracts and for counting the total number of months in the year.”According to the Mishnah, “four times in the year the world is judged: On Passover a decree is passed on the produce of the soil; on Shavuot on the fruits of the trees; on Rosh Hashana all men pass before Him (God); and on the Feast of Tabernacles a decree is passed on the rain of the year.”Mendy Greenberg is a student at the Yeshivas Menachem Mendal Lubavitch in Oak Park, which represents the Orthodox tradition. he offered his perspective on the holiday.“Rosh Hashana is a time to think back over the last year, and how to become a better person,” he said. “this is how we fulfill the meaning of the Torah, by bringing kindness into the world for all humanity.”for Laurie Faber of West Bloomfield Township, who identifies with the Reform movement, observing the holiday with family is a must. “Holiday time is family time,” she explains. “there is nothing better than wishing for a sweet year with my loved ones. I go to the temple when I can, but being with family is most important.”Since the beginning of the Diaspora, when the ancient temple in Jerusalem was destroyed in 70 CE, the Jewish people have migrated to virtually all parts of the world. While doing so they have developed a great diversity in theology, liturgy and cultural practices, many drawn from the countries in which they lived.at synagogues and at many Jewish homes, the holiday is greeted by the blowing of the shofar, a hollowed out ram’s horn that when blown as a trumpet admonishes those hearing it to awake and prepare for the coming judgment.Varied traditionsIn Reform temples this occurs every year, but in the Orthodox and Conservative traditions, the shofar is omitted when the holiday falls on Saturday, the Shabbat. The use of the shofar, however, does take place during the synagogue service, particularly the Mussaf (an additional prayer) in the Orthodox tradition. The Mussaf is modified in Conservative congregations and omitted in the Reform.although the basic sound of the shofar is familiar to many, there are many intricate details relating to its construction and use, all of which are dictated by tradition and which affect the sound one hears. for example, Tekiah is one lone blast, Shevarim consists of three broken sounds and Teruah is nine short blasts. each has its unique place in various holiday liturgies.Foods that denote the significance of holiday are numerous. The most universal Rosh Hashana item is an appetizer of apple slices and honey, an expression of hope for a sweet and prosperous New Year. Within the Sephardic community of Jews who trace their recent origins to Spain and the Middle East, a number of foods indigenous to Israel are served: leeks, dates and pomegranates. The Sephardim also enjoy fish served with the head, to signify Rosh Hashana as the “head of the year.”Ashkenazi Jews, those of European ancestry, typically serve a challa egg bread that is round to symbolize the cycle of the year, plus gefilte fish. Gefilte fish is a ground combination of various species of fish, typically carp, whitefish, mullet or pike mixed with egg whites, onions, matzo meal and sugar. Kugel, a pasta like side dish, also is popular.Before partaking in the traditional foods — plus generous servings of matzo ball soup, roast beef, chicken, chopped liver and vegetables — celebrants spread honey on a piece of challa and bid each other a “Shana Tova,” a greeting for a happy and healthy New Year.A custom carried out by some Ashkenazi synagogues is the Tashlich, or “casting off.” In the ceremony, the person’s previous years sins are “cast off” symbolically by throwing a piece of bread into a flowing body of water. In recent years, members of Temple Beth El in Bloomfield Hills have celebrated this ritual by the stream that runs beneath Franklin Cider Mill, much to the delight of curious non-Jews.Because of differences in the Hebrew calendar, which is partially based on the cycles of the moon, and our modern solar calendar, the holiday falls on a different date from year to year, usually occurring within the first three weeks of September.The difficulty of precisely pinpointing the date of the new moon has led to Conservative and Orthodox customs of celebrating the holiday over two days. In the Mishnah the Aramaic phrase Yoma Arichtac is used and refers to these two days as “one long day.”
